Caprylic Capric Triglyceride
Also known as Medium-chain triglycerides (C8-C10), MCT oil, Fractionated coconut oil, Miglyol 812, Myritol 318
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (CAS 65381-09-1) is a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) derived by hydrolysis of coconut oil, removal of free glycerin, and fractional distillation of the medium-chain fatty acids (primarily C8 caprylic acid and C10 capric acid), which are then re-esterified with glycerol. The resulting mixture is a clear, nearly odorless liquid oil that functions in cosmetic formulations as an emollient, solvent for lipid-soluble actives, and skin conditioning agent. It is one of the most widely used synthetic emollients in skincare because it is light, non-greasy, non-comedogenic, highly oxidation-resistant (no unsaturated double bonds to oxidize), and compatible with most other cosmetic ingredients. The CIR Expert Panel originally assessed it in 1980 (J Environ Pathol Toxicol 4(4):105-20), reaffirmed the safety conclusion in 2001 (republished Int J Toxicol 22(Suppl 1):1-35, 2003), and issued an amended safety assessment in December 2017 as part of a comprehensive re-review of triglyceride ingredients (per CIR's 15-year re-review schedule). All three assessments concluded that Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is safe as used in cosmetics. No concentration limits or use conditions are imposed in the QRT row.
Primary lightweight synthetic emollient in cosmetic formulations — non-greasy, non-comedogenic, excellent skin feel, compatible with most actives
Oxidation-resistant: the C8/C10 saturated fatty acids have no unsaturated double bonds, so the triglyceride does not rancidify during product shelf life (unlike unsaturated plant oils)
Solvent for lipid-soluble actives — commonly used to dissolve retinol, tocopherol, and fragrance compounds into water-based emulsions
CIR Expert Panel concluded safe as used in cosmetics across three assessments (1980 original, 2001 reaffirmation, 2017 amended triglycerides re-review)
Derived from coconut oil — positioned as a natural-derived ingredient in clean-beauty formulations even though it is functionally a processed MCT
