Dimethicone
Also known as Polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, Dimethyl polysiloxane, Silicone oil (dimethyl)
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Dimethicone (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS; CAS 9006-65-9) is the most widely used silicone in cosmetic formulations, functioning as a skin conditioning agent, emollient, anti-foaming agent, and film former. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel assessed dimethicone together with the broader family of siloxanes and concluded it is safe as used in cosmetics (published in Int J Toxicol 22(Suppl 2):11-35, 2003). No dermal safety conditions or concentration limits are imposed in the QRT row. Dimethicone is chemically inert, non-reactive with skin components, and does not penetrate intact skin at clinically meaningful levels.
Skin conditioning agent and emollient that imparts a smooth, non-greasy feel
Forms a breathable occlusive film that reduces transepidermal water loss without comedogenicity at typical use levels
Chemically inert and non-reactive with skin components
CIR Expert Panel concluded safe as used in cosmetics:11-35, 2003)
