Isodecyl Neopentanoate
Also known as Isodecyl pivalate, Ceraphyl SLK, 8-methylnonyl 2,2-dimethylpropanoate
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Isodecyl Neopentanoate (CAS 60209-82-7) is a branched-chain alkyl ester formed by esterification of isodecyl alcohol with pivalic acid (neopentanoic acid / 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid). It functions as a lightweight, non-greasy emollient and skin-conditioning agent. The CIR Expert Panel assessed this ingredient as part of its 2013 Amended Safety Assessment of Alkyl Esters (IJT 34 Suppl. 2, 2015), assigning a qualified-safe (SQ) verdict: safe for use in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating. No dedicated PubMed literature on safety of this specific ingredient was identified. The ingredient is listed in the EU CosIng general inventory but verification was not possible via the JS-rendered SPA.
Lightweight, low-viscosity branched ester emollient providing a dry, non-greasy skin feel
Excellent spreadability and compatibility with UV filters; commonly used in sunscreen and skin-care formulations
Commercially available as Ceraphyl SLK (Ashland); structurally stable branched-chain ester with good oxidative stability
Assessed safe for cosmetic use by CIR Expert Panel under the Alkyl Esters group assessment
EU SDS classification (H410): very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects — environmental hazard relevant to rinse-off formulations and manufacturing waste, not a consumer dermal safety concern at cosmetic use levels
