Isododecane
Also known as Isododecane, 2,2,4,6,6-Pentamethylheptane
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Isododecane is a volatile branched C12 alkane assessed by the CIR Expert Panel in a group review of isoparaffins (IJT 2012), concluding it is safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating. Percutaneous absorption is negligible: a 2009 skin absorption study found only 0.09% of applied isododecane was absorbed, with the remainder lost to evaporation, consistent with its highly volatile character. No genotoxicity or reproductive toxicity concerns were identified in the CIR isoparaffins assessment.
Highly volatile emollient and solvent — leaves no greasy residue
Non-comedogenic
Widely used as a volatile silicone alternative in long-wear makeup and sunscreens
