Safe

CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”

Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer is a high-molecular-weight copolymer of sodium acrylate and sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate monomers, used as a thickener, viscosity controller, and emulsion stabilizer in cosmetics. The CIR Expert Panel assessed 21 acryloyldimethyltaurate polymers as a group in a Final Report finalized April 2017, explicitly listing this copolymer, and concluded that these ingredients are safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration described in that safety assessment. VCRP data reported 197 uses (190 leave-on, 7 rinse-off), with reported maximum concentrations up to 2.4% in personal cleanliness products. No ingredient-specific PubMed literature was identified for this copolymer by its exact INCI name.

Effective thickener and emulsion stabilizer at low use concentrations; reported up to 2.4% in leave-on cosmetics

High-molecular-weight polymer (>1000 g/mol); not expected to penetrate intact skin

CIR Expert Panel concluded the acryloyldimethyltaurate polymer class safe with no concentration limits under present practices of use (Final Report 4/2017)

Multiple genotoxicity studies on related acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymers showed no mutagenic activity in bacterial reverse mutation assays

Concerns

CIR panel noted class-level concern about residual monomer impurities (acrylamide, vinyl formamide, methacrylamidolauric acid) in acryloyldimethyltaurate polymers generally, recommending cGMP controls; no ingredient-specific acrylamide finding for this copolymer
