Tridecyl Trimellitate
Also known as tridecyl trimellitate, tri(tridecyl) trimellitate, tri(tridecyl) benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylate
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Tridecyl trimellitate is a trialkyl trimellitate assessed by the CIR Expert Panel as safe when formulated to be non-irritating (Final report 09/2015). A 2024 IJT publication (PMID 38158838) comprehensively reviewed five trialkyl trimellitates including tridecyl trimellitate, confirming safety at current use concentrations when formulated to avoid irritation. Tridecyl trimellitate was noted as slightly irritating to rabbit eyes in one study, but is not significantly absorbed through skin, addressing any endocrine-related concerns about the class.
Highly stable, low-odor emollient with excellent skin feel and spreadability
Used as an alternative to mineral oil with good pigment-dispersing properties
Provides shine in lipsticks and hair serums; suitable for ethnic hair products
- · Slight eye irritation potential in rabbit eye test (noted in CIR trialkyl trimellitate group assessment, IJT 43(1_suppl):96S-120S, 2024)
