Valine
Also known as L-Valine, 2-Amino-3-methylbutanoic acid
“CIR Expert Panel says: safe as used in cosmetics.”
Valine (CAS 72-18-4) is a branched-chain proteinogenic α-amino acid used in cosmetics as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) component and humectant. The CIR Expert Panel group assessment of all 21 α-amino acids (Burnett et al., IJT 32(S4):41-64, 2013; PMID 24335967) explicitly names Valine in the conclusion as safe in the present practices of use and concentration. The QRT records Valine with Finding=S (Safe, unconditional) and no qualifying conditions.
Proteinogenic branched-chain α-amino acid; essential amino acid (cannot be biosynthesized by humans)
Natural moisturizing factor (NMF) component — free amino acids including valine are endogenous constituents of the stratum corneum that maintain skin hydration and plasticity
Humectant and skin-conditioning agent: low molecular weight (117.15 g/mol) branched-chain structure contributes to water-binding capacity in the stratum corneum
CIR Expert Panel concluded valine is safe as used in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration:41-64, 2013; QRT Finding=S, no conditions)
